Interview: Frankie – Swell Vintage

Tell us about yourself! (Whatever cross your mind)
My name is Frankie, I live in London, England, and I make jewellery! Being a vintage obsessive, all of my pieces are made entirely from vintage and antique parts, and each item is one of a kind.

You have a very eclectic sense. Which decade inspires you most?
I am a really big fan of Agatha Christie, especially Poirot, so I would have to say late 1920s/early 1930s. I’ve been watching the BBC series of Poirot solidly over the Christmas period, and I just can’t get enough of all the classically cut dresses, kiss curled hair and red lipstick! Their accessories were so extravagant too – I think I was born at the wrong time!

The places you love to shop for vintage bargains?
This really varies for me, as I love to hunt around. For real bargains, Ebay is great and so is Etsy. I’m also fortunate to be in London where there are so many great vintage shops, especially around Carnaby Street and Covent Garden. I found some amazing vintage and antique jewellery bargains when I visited Edinburgh a few months ago, especially in a shop called Trinket which now sells my jewellery!

What was the initial idea to start your own Etsy shop?
I joined etsy last year (as a buyer), and loved it from the get-go. I am continually amazed and inspired by the work of some of the sellers on here. After spending many (many, many, many) of my hard-earned pounds on the wonderous creations of others, I decided to give it a go myself. I have always loved vintage and jewellery, so it was the next logical step for me to put the two together. What I do is by no means a new idea, but it’s a lot of fun. The idea that somebody is wearing something that I’ve made with my chubby little hands also makes me very excited indeed.

Who are your favorite designers? (Pick three)
Ohhh, this is a toughy. Jewellery designers or general fashion? Can I list both? I’m going to be cheeky and list both…but it’s so hard to pick just 3 of each!

Jewellery designers:
- The Hand of Fatima – Mariam of The Hand of Fatima has an amazing eye for design, and is also a wonderful person! I bought a vintage brothel token locket from her a few months back and wear it constantly. I love her bold, fearless designs.
- Madame Fortuna - Another designer whose work always blows me away! I especially love her huge collage necklaces.
- Opulent Oddities – Jordan of Opulent Oddities really hunts around thrift stores to make her pieces, and it shows – all of her work has this wonderfully dirty, authentic quality that I just love. It really feels like you’re wearing a bit of history!

Fashion designers:
- Hannah Marshall – She knows just how to make a black dress look innovative and original! She also has an amazing fringe and is a fellow Brit.
- Liza Rietz – an etsy favourite. Her kimono jackets are dreamy!
- Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel – it seems so obvious, but who doesn’t love Karl? Plus I think all girls are automatically programmed to lust over Chanel.

Ich bin ein großer Fan von Agatha Christie, besonders Poirot. Am ehesten 1920 und die frühen Dreißiger Jahre. Ich habe die BBC Serie über Poirot während der Weihnachtsfeiertage gesehen und konnte von den klassisch geschnittenen Kleidern, den gelockten Haaren und den roten Lippen nicht genug bekommen! Die Accessoires waren sehr extravagant – ich glaube ich bin zur falschen Zeit geboren worden.

Wo hältst du am liebsten nach Vintage Schnäppchen Ausschau?
Das ändert sich bei mir oft, ich mag es auf die Jagd zu gehen. Für echte Schnäppchen ist Ebay und Etsy großartig. Glücklicherweise lebe ich in London wo es viele einzigartige Vintage Shops gibt, besonders rund um Carnaby Street und Covent Garden.
Ich habe einzigartigen Vintage Schmuck in Edinburgh gefunden, als ich vor einigen Monaten dort war. Besonders in einem Laden namens Trinket, der jetzt meine Kollektion verkauft!

Warum hast du beschlossen deinen eigenen Etsy Shop zu eröffnen?
Ich bin zu Etsy for einem Jahr gekommen (als Käufer) und habe es gleich von Anfang an geliebt. Ich bin immer wieder überrascht und von den anderen Verkäuferin inspiriert. Nachdem ich viele (viele, viele, viele) meiner hart verdienten Pfund dort gelassen habe, habe ich mir gedacht meinen eigenen Shop zu eröffnen. Ich habe Schmuck und Vintage schon immer geliebt, also war es naheliegend beides zusammenzuführen. Es ist zwar nicht unbedingt eine neue Idee, aber es macht sehr viel Spaß und der Gedanke, dass jemand anderer etwas trägt, was ich mit meinen Händen erschaffen habe, finde ich sehr aufregend.

Schmuck:
- The Hand of Fatima – Mariam von The Hand of Fatima hat ein geniales Auge für Design und ist ein wunderbarer Mensch! Ich habe von ihr vor einigen Monaten ein Stück gekauft und trage es ständig. Ich liebe ihre mutigen Kreationen.
- Madame Fortuna – Noch eine Designerin deren Arbeiten mich immer begeistern. Besonders liebe ich ihre riesigen Halsketten.
- Opulent Oddities – Jordan von Opulent Oddities sucht ihre Teile in verschiedenen Trödelläden und macht daraus ihre Stücke und alle haben diese wunderbare authentische Qualität, die ich einfach liebe. Es fühlt sich so an als würde man ein Stück Geschichte tragen.

Kleidung:

- Hannah Marshall – Sie weiß wie man selbst ein kleines Schwarzes innovativ aussehen lässt.
- Liza Rietz – mein Favorit auf Etsy. Ihre Kimono Jacken sind traumhaft!
- Karl Lagerfeld für Chanel – es ist sehr offenkundig, aber wer liebt nicht Karl? Und ich denke alle Mädels sind darauf programmiert Chanel zu lieben.
